This weekend, on 28th and 29th June 2019, Gay Pride is back in Barcelona! Here at ACYH, we encourage our guests to travel respectfully with an open mind, and get to know people from all walks of life, and that is exactly what Gay Pride is about. While the celebrations have been going on since 15th June, the big ticket event is this weekend, where there will be a parade and music, followed by a night-long party.
Since 2008, Barcelona has hosted Gay Pride every year, and people come from across the world to celebrate here. Maybe you’re wondering why Barcelona is so popular for Gay Pride? For many years Barcelona has been a top choice for LGBT tourists because it is a cosmopolitan city with a lot of freedom, tolerance and respect. The Eixample neighbourhood has been coined ‘Gaixample’, since it is the so-called gay district of Barcelona, thanks to the accepting atmosphere, not to mention the abundance of LGBT-friendly bars and clubs.
To give you some background – celebrating Gay Pride originally began in 1970 as a reaction to the Stonewall riots that took place on 28th June 1969. Police in NYC arrived at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, to shut it down (at this time, homosexuality was a crime) and rather than leave and close the bar, the 200 people inside resisted and rioted, to show their frustration of prejudice against the gay community. The Stonewall riots brought attention to this lack of acceptance, and ever since then, Gay Pride has been celebrated in June every year to honour LGBT rights. And, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the riots, so celebrations are more meaningful than ever!
